Review Acer Aspire 4730Z-421G25Mn

by mk on May.28, 2009, under Technology

After my NEC Versa L1101-1800DW was stolen by fucking thief, alhamdulillah I have some money to buy a new notebook. I go to Hi-Tech Mall Surabaya with my friends to buy new notebook. Until there, I was confused to select the notebook so much choice. Some of the conditions that must exist in the new notebook include:

  • Using Intel’s CPU
  • Using Intel’s chipset
  • Display must <=14″
  • Has >1GB of memory
  • Has >120 GB harddisk
  • Has webcam
  • Not Atom CPU
  • Not AMD

I don’t like Intel Atom CPU cause I must compile some project which I must use some powerful CPU and not too extravagant power. I interested with two product from Acer:

  • Acer Aspire 4530
  • Acer Aspire 4730Z

Acer Aspire 4530 using AMD CPU that is not too economical electric power so that the Battery runs out quickly. But Aspire 4530 using Nvidia 9100 GPU. Price is very cheap.Acer Aspire 4730Z using Pentium Dual Core CPU and chipset Intel 40GL. The other specs are similar. So, I choose Aspire 4730Z that using Pentium Dual Core CPU than Aspire 4530 that using Turion X2 CPU.

Specs of Aspire 4730Z-421G25Mn :

  • Intel Pentium Dual Core T4200 (2.0 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB)
  • Chipset Intel 40GL
  • VGA Mobile Intel Graphichs media Accelerator 4500M
  • 1 GB DDR2 PC 5300
  • 14.1″ WXGA Acer CrystalBrite LCD
  • 250 GB HDD Hitachi
  • DVD Super Multi Dual Layer (Using Optiarc DVD RW AD-7560S
  • Realtek HD Audio
  • Realtek LAN 100/1000 Mbit
  • 802.11b/g/Draft-N WLAN (Using Ralink WLAN)
  • 5 in 1 Card Reader
  • Modem

The price is only IDR 5,875,000. I added with 2 GB of RAM, so total RAM is 3 GB. I actually want to add memory so that in total can be 4 GB. But I just use 32 bit Operating System that only can detect 3 GB of memory. The price of RAM only IDR 250,000. So totally I must pay IDR 6,125,000.

After pay and get home, I install my Aspire 4730Z with Windows XP 32-bit. First I must change BIOS that using AHCI to IDE. Cause Windows XP cannot detect AHCI harddisk. Performance from my Aspire 4730Z not too bad. Faster than my NEC Versa L1101. So this is my result:

Pros:

  • Using new chipset, CPU,
  • Gigabit LAN,
  • Draft-N WLAN,
  • large harddisk 250GB HDD,
  • bright webcam
  • Sound from speaker is very good

Cons:

  • Only two ports of USB 2.0,
  • there is no driver for Windows XP, only for Vista,
  • Touchpad too large, so sometime move the cursor does not intentionally
